TAKING THE LEAD

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM 2009

 

WHY A LEADERSHIP PROGRAM?

Many people with disabilities do not get enough opportunities to develop leadership skills.

TAKING THE LEAD is a pilot project that aims to provide people with disabilities in the Geelong, Surfcoast Shire and Colac Otway area with an opportunity to learn, develop and practise essential leadership skills.

 

WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

Leadership is an ability to motivate people to work together.

A leader is the person who is able to inspire others to want to follow his/her direction.

 

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

All people can learn how to become good leaders.

TAKING THE LEAD will provide its participants with a specially designed Development Program which will help them to learn about:

How to build confidence and improve self esteem
Better communication skills
Goal setting and decision making
Leadership styles and skills
Public speaking and representation skills
Community participation
Practical Leadership Opportunities within Local and State Government settings, information access and quality standards


EXPECTED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS & PROGRAM TIME COMMITMENT?

We expect to have a maximum of 24 participants- 12 mentors and 12 Leadership Participants.

The program will run from 19th May to 27th October 2009.

 

PROGRAM OUTLINE

Training part of the program:
Introductory “Meet your mentor / Leadership Participant” session (one-off session of approximately 1 to 1 ½ max duration)
Self Advocacy Course (delivered in two individual sessions of approximately 1 ½ to 2 hr duration each as follows:
Session1: Choices&Decisions empowerment and Session2: Rights, Responsibilities and Representation)
Practical Leadership Opportunity (one-off session of approximately 1 ½ to 2hr max duration)
Public Speaking (one-off session of approximately 1 ½ to 2hr max duration)

Eight Individual Mentoring meeting sessions (mentoring sessions of approximately 1 hr duration each, held fortnightly),

Program closure and celebration/certificates presentation

Program evaluation and statistical data collection.

 

ESTIMATED COST TO PARTICIPANTS?

As this is a pilot project, there will be no cost to participate in the program.
